What is ADAS?

2019-11-04

With the development of science and technology, “smart car”, “automotive self-driving technology” and other terms are not unfamiliar to the public. How can we apply intelligent technology to assist human driving, reduce traffic accidents and ensure personal safety? It has always been a matter of close concern and is also the future trend of transportation industry chain development. There is a more mature technology that can be seen as a simplified version of the vehicle’s autopilot, which we call the Advanced Driver Assistance System. So what is ADAS? How has it changed our way of mobility?

1. The semi-autonomous ADAS
What is ADAS in automotive? Well…It is an active safety function integrated control system. Its principle is to use the on-board sensors such as laser radar and camera installed on the vehicle to sense the surrounding environment in real time, and provide accurate road condition data, obstacles, road markings, etc. for the vehicle computer system. The on-board computer detects and identifies various objects based on the data, and makes corresponding judgments and execution decisions through algorithmic analysis. Therefore, in this process of detection, identification and execution, chips and algorithms are crucial. Then, the behavior decision made by the system can make the driver be aware of the possible danger in advance, directly control the vehicle to avoid a collision if necessary, and even take direct measures to actively intervene the driving behavior to ensure driving safety.

2. What are the main functions of the ADAS system? How does it work?
Its main functions include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) , Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Parking Assist-Perpendicular Reverse (PA-PDR), Around View Monitor (AVM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), High Beam Assist (HBA),  Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC), Low Beam Assist-Dynamic (LBA-D),etc. Today, we’ve highlighted three features to share with you.

A. Autonomous Emergency Braking AEB+ Forward Collision Warning FCW-Freeing the driver’s right foot
Braking is one of the most important safety systems of vehicles, but in many emergency situations, the driver is too late to react. According to the National Highway Safety Administration NHTSA, up to 94 percent of car accidents are related to human error, such as mistaking the brakes for the gas pedal, gear reverses and so on.

Autonomous Emergency Braking AEB works by judging the braking action (power and speed) of the driver and increasing the braking force in the event of an emergency, thereby shortens the braking distance. The effect of the system is even more pronounced for drivers such as the elderly or women who do not have enough ankles and leg strength. The FCW monitors the vehicle in front. When the distance between the vehicle and the preceding vehicle is less than the safe distance, the driver will be alerted in time.

If the automatic transmission liberates your left foot, the Autonomous Emergency Braking AEB and Forward Collision Warning FCW will liberate your right foot, and at the same time prevent the vehicle rear-end traffic accident to a certain extent.

B. Lane Departure Warning LDW + Lane Keeping Assist LKA-Coping with driving distraction
In the case of long distance driving, the LDW and LKA systems can automatically alert the driver to be distracted if the vehicle’s trajectory deviates.

C. Advanced version of ACC Adaptive Cruise Control-Improving driving comfort and safety
The principle of the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control is to automatically recognize the vehicle in front and the surrounding environment by setting the cruise speed and the distance of the vehicle in front, as well as other on-board sensors such as cameras, and then intelligently adjust the speed of the vehicle and automatically follow the vehicle, eliminating the trouble of frequently braking.

According to GM’s assessment, the automatic emergency braking with Forwarding Collision Warning reduced the rear-end collision by 46%; the Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning function reduced the accident associated with lane departure by 20%; Blind-Spot Collision Warning can reduce collision accidents by 26%. Vehicle that equipped with Reversing Automatic Braking has the lowest accident rate and can reduce the incidence of accidents by 81%.

The above technology and functions sound exciting, but at present, it is still difficult to be implemented. The market penetration of ADAS in new cars is still at a low level of only 2%. It has many applications in luxury cars while less used in ordinary cars.  After an extensive search in the market, we found that the ADAS system has been applied and implemented in many onboard sensor devices, such as in dash camera. Then, What is ADAS on a dash cam? what would happen to the rearview monitor carry with ADAS?

Built-in front and rear dual camera, Jimi JC200 dashcam support 1080P high-definition video, ultra clear night vision and can restore the truth in the event of traffic disputes. Equipped with ADAS, JC200 can scan the lane line in real time, accurately determine the track offset, support lane departure warning and forward collision warning. Once an emergency occurs, the video will be automatically uploaded to the cloud, and realize real-time monitoring and one-click SOS warning notification. If necessary, the owner or fleet manager can remotely cut-off power, thus reducing traffic accidents and illegal driving.

At the same time, JC200 dashcam supports DMS driving monitoring system. Developed by a professional algorithm team, the device can identify the driver status of distract, sleep, smoke, call, etc., and automatically upload to the cloud through algorithm analysis. The warning notices would be pushed to the fleet managers and drivers timely, and then enable them to regulate the illegal driving behavior and reduce the risk of traffic.

It is necessary to configure a rearview monitor for driving. If your dash camera support ADAS+DMS, it is an icing on the cake, making your driving journey safer.
